It's possible that in this place the Castle of Frondigliano rose in the old days and that the castle was in the territory of the castle of Monte Calvi. What we know for a fact, is that Sorbigliano was, in the early 15th century, a house of the Pitti family, who was its owner for many years. Buonaccorso Pitti, in his chronicle, defines Sorbigliano as a "beautiful and good property". In the 16th century Sorbigliano passed to Gianfigliazzis, who then were the owners of many other possessions in the vicinity and from Gianfigliazzis Sorbigliano was inherited by the Marquesses Lottaringhi della Stufa. The Marquess Ferdinando, in the 18th century, restored the building complex and demolished the ancient private chapel, building another attached to the villa.

On the occasion of such demolition some graves of Roman age were found underground. Last owners were The Acciaioli. The tradition has it that Gugliarello Acciaioli, family founder, persecuted by the Emperor Federico Barbarossa, escaped from Brescia to settle in the castle of Cerbaia, which was belonged to the Counts Alberti. Acciaiolis' provenance from Brescia is confirmed by the fact that they, since remote age, bore the same ensign of that city: a blue lion rampant with big nails and tongue red in white field. To an enterprising man, Firenze represented the ideal residence: in Florence Gugliarello extended and consolidated his fortune, and he founded the illustrious family who was named Acciaioli and who had big part...

...in the events of what had become his country. Great member of the family was Niccolò Acciaioli, born in 1310 from Acciaiolo di Nicola. He lived in Napoli almost like a king, he was Gran Siniscalco of the king of Napoli. He too was the viceroy of Puglie. Florentin Republic always honoured Niccolò Acciaioli covertly, because it was jealous of his greatness. Niccolò Acciaioli was also the founder of the magnificent Certosa of Galluzzo, erected in 1341 from the design of Orcagna, where he wanted to be buried. In Certosa, in the family's sepulchre which he made build, lies his intact, armed image who reminds posterity of his illustrious name. The funeral monument is adorned by armorial bearings in which the lion rampant of the Acciaioli holds in its paws the flag...

Over the armorial bearings sneers a skull, and you can read the motto that, last tribute of his admired devotion, had suggested his brotherly friend, the graduated poet Zanobi da strada: "Qui metuit, mortem cupit nihil". One of this family's descendants, Ruggero Acciaioli, became Sorbigliano's owner in the half of 20th century. After having had great success in the branch of textile industry in Prato, he decided to transfer his entrepreneurial mentality into agriculture.

...He carefully modernized wineries, which he made completely tile, many years before the current hygienic and sanitary regulations. He made build the oil press and the jar room, with forefront equipments at that time. His interventions extended also to the inside of the villa, where he made restore the bedroom floor, giving it a great touch of style.
